BUILDING SCHOOL COMMUNITY

I learned the value of building community in the first school we worked with. We had been called to help reduce the number of suspensions in the school. So, we trained the faculty in more effective methods, helping them connect with the students instead of trying to exert control over them.

The efforts were successful and suspensions went down by almost 30% in the first 90 days! But there were still many conflicts between students. And what we realized is that the students also needed support, to build a culture of compassion between each other. So we worked with the student body and once they had identified what was important, it did not take long for the teens to come up with ideas. Students started to create what was needed.









And it worked. The students who had gone through conflict resolution with us began to help other students work through conflicts. Others started discussions about challenges facing teens. The students took leadership and together with the faculty, they created a restorative community built on trust and compassion. It was beautiful to see the transformation!
